Once dried and shucked (remove outer shell), one is left with a natural sponge for bathing or washing dishes! Specialty craft soaps can be made from laterally cut pieces, providing an abrasive scrubbie and soap all at the same time. 
Start indoors 6 weeks before last frost (require a relatively long growing season), or direct sow after last frost. Grow on a large trellis (a fence works best).

Gourds
The word gourd is used in reference to fruits of plants in the two Cucurbitaceae genera Lagenaria and Cucurbita, that when mature exhibit a dried out hollow shell. Gourds are one of the oldest domesticated plants in existence, with specimens having been found in archaeological sights dating back as far as 13,000 BC. 
With countless varieties of gourds in the world, most of them share similar growth habits & culture. Slight differences mean that some varieties may require special consideration such as Luffa, which require a long growing season & must be started indoors in regions with short growing seasons.
