Sumac seeds require scarification prior to germination.
Perineal woody shrub that grows 7-15 feet tall.
The seeds (berries) form large clusters (great for decoration when dried). They are also used to make sumac tea that is very high in vitamin C, & taste similar to lemonade. Just put a few in your mouth for a crisp, tart, candy like flavor (don't swallow the actual seeds, spit them out when the flavor is gone). Beneficial for many species of wildlife.
From MSU extension, "Sumac is reported to have several medicinal benefits. American Indians used it to treat colds, fever and scurvy while also grinding the berries mixed with clay and using as a salve on open wounds. Sumac has also shown to have benefits for treating diarrhea, dysentery, sore throats, infections, asthma and cold sores. Sumac berries are also used in beekeeping smokers".
